New York - The Lehman College baseball team split a doubleheader with John Jay on Saturday in Manhattan. The Lightning won the opener, 5-3, but fell to the Bloodhounds in game two, 8-2. The team is now 6-8 overall and 3-1 in CUNYAC games.
In game one, Emmanuel Velasquez allowed two earned runs over six innings to earn the win. He is now 2-1 on the year. Rich Frommelt pitched a scoreless seventh to earn his second save. John Jay scored a run in the first to grab the lead. Lehman answered with two in the third and one in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. In the third, Lehman got a pair of unearned runs without a hit. Euriel Murray walked and scored. Julius Puryear reached on an error and later scored. The run in the fourth came on consecutive hits from Natanael Toribio and Namir Garcia. John Jay got a run back in the fifth and Lehman led 3-2 heading into the seventh.
The Lightning scored two runs on four hits in the seventh to go up, 5-2. David Rodriguez led off with a single. Two batters later, Anthony Riley drove him in with an RBI base hit. Puryear reached on a fielder's choice that eliminated Riley, but scored on a Carlo Francisco double. The Bloodhounds scored once in the seventh, but Lehman won 5-3.
Jarret Oehler struck out seven in a complete game loss in game two. He dropped to 2-3 on the year. Lehman got both runs in the top of the first. Puryear led off the game with a triple. Francisco doubled to right center two batters later, scoring Puryear. Mark Vargas was hit by a pitch and Toribio reached on an infield hit and Lehman had the bases loaded for David Rodriguez. He worked a walk and forced in Francisco for the second run. Lehman would go on to lost, 8-2.
The Lehman College baseball team returns to action on Monday, March 26, when they cross the Hudson River to face Rutgers-Newark at 3:30 PM.
