Lehman (7-8) pounded out 14 hits in route to an 8-7 victory over Rutgers-Newark (5-9).
The Raiders jumped all over Lehman in the first inning scoring three runs on three hits. Lehman starter Rich Frommelt was then able to settle down and only allowed two more runs on three hits over the next five innings.
The Lightning fought back with two in the third. Brandon Castillo led off the frame with a double to left center. Euriel Murray then drew a walk and after an Anthony Riley sacrifice, the Lightning had second and third with one out. A sac fly by Juluis Puryear and a single by Mike Zerbo brought the Lightning to within one. In the fourth and fifth innings each team plated a run to make the score 5-4 after five. The sixth and seventh innings were scoreless. Lehman plated three runs in the eighth to take their first lead of the game. Back to back singles by Natanael Toribio and David Rodriguez started the rally. After a pitching change and a walk, the Lightning had bases loaded with no outs. Back to back singles by Murray and Riley gave the Lightning a 6-5 advantage. After a foul out, Zerbo delivered a single to right to extend the lead to 7-5. The Raiders got one back in the bottom of the inning and another in the bottom of the ninth but could not overtake the Lightning. Castillo belted his second two bagger of the afternoon to give Lehman an insurance run that they needed.
Four Lightning players had a multi-hit game; Toribio had three hits, Zerbo, Murray and Castillo had two apiece. Jose Albrincole came on in relief in the seventh to earn the victory, his second of the year.
The Lightning return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Ramapo College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
