Brooklyn, NY - The Lehman College men's volleyball team took a set, but ultimately fell in four to Brooklyn College in a volleyball match played in Brooklyn on Tuesday. The scores of the sets went 25-20, 22-25, 25-22 and 25-23.
Set one had eight ties before the Bulldogs took it, 25-20. Yaw Eshun had a kill and Peter Veljovic and George Montilla followed with a combined block to put the Lightning up 14-12. From there, Brooklyn scored three straight points, Lehman tied it at 15 and the Bulldogs took the lead for good.
Lehman took a 4-0 lead in set two on a kill and ace from Roberto Ventura Diaz, another kill from Veljovic and a block from Mentor Mahmuti. Later in the set, Montilla kill gave Lehman its largest lead, six points, at 12-6. They never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the set and finished it off with a Veljovic kill.
Set three was back-and-forth as both sides jockeyed for control. The score would be tied 13 different times in the set, the final time came at 19-all. The Bulldogs scored two of the final three points to take the set, 25-22.
The Lightning trailed 10-3 in the final set before they rallied. Later, a 4-0 run got them within 14-10 as they got consecutive kills from Diaz and two strong serves from Jose Bautista that led to errors. A Filipe Velandia kill later in the set, tied the score at 21-21, but Brooklyn took it, 25-23.
In the match, Diaz had a double-double of 14 kills and ten digs. Bautista also got 13 assists and ten digs. Juan Carlos Santos led the team with 12 digs. The team is now 14-12 overall and 4-3 in CUNYAC competition.
The Lehman College men's volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, March 31 when they travel to Langhorne, Pennsylvania for a tri-match with Fontbonne University and Carin. The matchups are scheduled for 1 and 3 PM.
