Box Score 2 Langhorne, Pa. - The Lehman College men's volleyball team dropped matches to Fontbonne and Cairn in a tri-match from Langhorne, Pennsylvania on Saturday. The Lightning fell to the Highlanders 3-1 and went down to Fontbonne by scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-21.
The first match went to Fontbonne, 3-0. Set one went to the Griffins, 25-14. They took a 2-0 lead, but Lehman scored three straight to go up, 3-2. Kills from Peter Veljovic and Jose Bautista and a block assist from Bautista and Velandia accounted for the three tallies. After that the set would eventually be level at 4-4. From there, Fontbonne pulled away, eventually going up 14-7. A 4-1 run pulled Lehman within four, at 15-11. The Griffins went on to take the set, 25-14.
Lehman fell behind early in set two and never bounced back as Fontbonne took it, 25-12. Set three was much more competitive. The score would be tied at 4-4 when the Lightning got hot. A Bautista serve led to an error and Yaw Eshun followed with a kill and Lehman was up, 6-4. Fontbonne and Lehman exchanged points and the Griffins added another and the score was 7-6, Lightning. Three of the next four points went to Lehman and they led 10-7. Fontbonne rallied to tie the set at 11-11. They regained the lead and took the set and match, 25-21.
The second match went to Cairn, 3-1. The scores against Cairn 25-20, 25-19, 20-25 and 25-21. Filipe Velandia led Lehman with 18 kills and seven blocks. George Montilla finished with 35 assists and seven digs. Juan Carlos Santos led the team with 11 digs.
Cairn went up 7-3 early in set one. Later they lead 14-9. Lehman rallied off four straight points to get within 14-13. The points came off an error, a Yan Eshun kill and blocks from Velanida, Eshun and Xayveon Williams. The Lightning never tied the score and Cairn took set one, 25-20.
Set two saw 11 ties, eventually evening the score at 11-11. From there, Cairn went up 16-11. Lehman got within three, but Cairn took the set, 25-19. Set three went to the Lighting, 25-20. Lehman went up 2-0 on an ace by Velandia and a Highlanders' error. The score would go back and forth from there as neither side could gain any real momentum. Late in the set, Lehman led 23-20. Velandia got a kill and the Lightning led 24-20. A Bautista serve was misplayed the set went to Lehman, 25-20. The final set went to Cairn, 25-21. Lehman trailed 9-6, but a 4-0 run put them up, 10-9. The points came three errors and a Velandia kill. Cairn went on to win the set 25-21 and the match, 3-1.
The Lehman College men's volleyball team is now 14-14 on the season. They return to action on Tuesday, April 3, when they face Hunter College in Manhattan. The game time is 6PM.
