Bronx, N.Y. - Sophomore pitcher Jarret Oehler struck out a career-high 12 batters over six innings of work to lead Lehman to a 12-5 victory over Old Westbury in a game played on the South Field on Tuesday. The Lightning improved to 11-13 overall.
The team batted around in each of the first two innings to build a 9-0 lead. Lehman got five runs in the first and four more in the second. Carlo Francisco and Michael Zerbo both walked. Three batters later, David Rodriguez blasted a double to left center, scoring Francisco and Zerbo. Rodriguez came in on a Nataneal Toribio single up the middle and Lehman led 3-0. Namir Garcia was hit by a pitch and Rob Kiernan walked to load the bases. Euriel Murray was hit by a pitch, forcing home Toribio and making the score, 4-0. Francisco followed with a walk the drove in Garcia and Lehman led 5-0.
An inning later Lehman loaded the bases again after Mark Vargas was hit by a pitch and Rodriguez and Toribio singled. From there, Garcia cleared the bases with a double to left center. The Lightning led, 8-0. Kiernan followed with a base hit to left that scored Garcia and Lehman was up 9-0.
The Panthers scored three in the fifth and one more in the seventh and were within 9-4. Lehman scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh as Julius Puryear homered and Garcia added another RBI hit. Old Westbury scored a run in the ninth and Lehman won 12-5.
Garcia led the team with four RBI and Puryear and Rodriguez each collected three hits. Jonathan Rogers tossed the final three innings to earn his first save of the season.
The Lehman College baseball team returns to action on Saturday, April 14 when they host Baruch in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for noon.
