Brooklyn, N.Y. - The Lehman College men's volleyball team disposed of Brooklyn College, 3-1, in a CUNYAC quarterfinal match played in Brooklyn on Tuesday. The Lightning won the season-series with the Bulldogs, 2-1.
Lehman needed four sets to earn the win. The scores of the sets were 22-25, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-14. Yaw Eshun led the team with 20 kills, while Jose Bautista recorded 19 digs. George Montilla added 45 assists.
Neither side led by more than two points early in set one. Eventually, the score would be tied at 16-all, but Brooklyn rattled off four straight points to grab a 20-16 lead. The Bulldogs took the first set, 25-22.
Lehman went up 3-1 in set two on a pair of kills from Eshun and another from Filipe Velandia. An Eshun service ace later in the set gave the Lightning its largest lead, 5-points, at 15-10. A Brooklyn service error gave the set to Lehman, 25-21.
Brooklyn led 4-2 early in set three until a 4-0 run gave the Lightning a 6-4 advantage. Peter Veljovic opened the run with a kill. His strong serving led to a pair of Bulldog errors and a Velandia run. Brooklyn rallied and knotted the set at 11-11. Another 4-0 run put Lehman up, 15-11. Later a Veljovic kill gave the Lightning its largest lead of the set, six points, at 22-16. An Eshun kill gave the set to Lehman, 25-20.
The fourth set was back and forth early before both teams were even at 9-9. From there, Lehman took control with a 7-0 run. A Veljovic kill started the scoring spree and the Lightning got kills from Eshun and Velandia and strong serves from Bautista. A Veljovic kill disposed of Brooklyn 25-14.
Following the victory, Eshun reflected on the team's recent play, "We had a good stretch this season. But at this point it's do or die and we need to finish strong." The Lightning advance to the CUNYAC semifinal where they face Hunter College on Friday, April 13, from Baruch College. The first serve is slated for 6:00 PM.
