Lehman Gets Ten Hits in 8-5 Win over St. Joseph's Brooklyn

Bronx, N.Y. - The Lehman College baseball team used a 10-hit performance to earn an 8-5 victory over St. Joseph's Brooklyn in a game played on the South Field on Thursday.  Julius Puryear led the team with four hits and three runs scored.

The Lightning took a 2-0 lead in the first.  With two outs, Puryear singled and stole second.  Mark Vargas followed with a walk.  After that, David Rodriguez lifted a ground-rule double into the right field corner, plating Puryear and moving Vargas to third.  Vargas scored on an error.

Lehman pushed the lead to 5-0 in the third.  Michael Zerbo singled and stole second.  He scored on an RBI triple by Puryear.  Two batters later, Rodriguez connected on his second double of the game, scoring Puryear and giving the Lightning a 4-0 lead.  Natanael Toribio singled home Rodriguez to make the score 5-0.

In the fifth, Puryear singled.  Rodriguez was intentionally walked and Toribio drove them both home with a double.  Lehman was up 7-0 after five innings.  The Bears scored four times in the sixth to pull within three, at 7-4.  A Vargas sac fly in the bottom of the inning scored Zerbo and the Lightning led 8-4.  St. Joseph's tacked on a run in the seventh, but Jarret Oehler threw two scoreless innings to earn the save.

Emmanuel Velasquez got the start and earned his team-leading, third win of the year.  Zerbo, Rodriguez and Toribio each had two hits.  As a team, the Lightning stole seven bases.

The Lehman College baseball team returns to action on Sunday, April 8, when they face the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the Bronx.  The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
