Bronx, N.Y. - The Lehman College baseball team won the battle of the Bronx on Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of the College of Mount St. Vincent on Sunday from the South Field. The Lighting took the opener, 12-2 and won the rubber match, 17-2.
Lehman jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one whe David Rodriguez blasted a grand slam homerun in the first inning. Michael Zerbo and Julius Puryear walked before the blast, and Mark Vargas reached on a single. The Lightning made the score 5-0 in the third when Vargas and Rodriguez connected on consecutive doubles.
Lehman put the game out of reach in the fifth. They scored six runs to go up, 11-0. Anthony Riley, Euriel Murray and Puryear each drove in a pair of runs in the innings to account for the six. The Dolphins scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to erase the shutout, but Zerbo connected on a solo shot in the seventh to cap the scoring. Lehman took the opener, 12-2.
Rich Frommelt tossed six innings and allowed just one earned run. He lowered his team-best ERA to 2.72. Eamon Maher tossed a scoreless seventh to finish the game. Zerbo scored three runs and Rodriguez drove in four runs.
Lehman took a 7-0 lead in game two with a run in the first, two in the second and four more in the third. Carlo Francisco singled and stole second in the first. He scored on a Puryear ball that was misplayed for an error. Namir Garcia and Rob Kiernan reached on consecutive singles and came in on a 2-RBI double by Murray. The runs in the third came on an RBI double from Puryear, a ground-rule double from David Rodriguez, a balk and a ground out.
The Lightning added three runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Vargas and a two-run-homer from David Rodriguez. Vargas added an RBI double in the seventh. Lehman also scored four additional runs in the inning via walks.
Jose Albrincole earned the win for the Lightning. Jonathan Rogers also tossed a scoreless innings.
The Lehman College baseball team improved to 10-12 overall. They return to action on Monday, April 9, when they face Montclair State in New Jersey. First pitch is slated for 3:30 PM.
