Men's Volleyball Drops Tri-Match to Sage and NJCU

Albany, N.Y. - The men's volleyball team dropped to 14-17 on the year with a pair of losses to Sage and New Jersey City University in a tri-match played at Sage on Saturday.  The team has now dropped eight-straight contests.

The scores against the Gators were 25-12, 25-15 and 25-19, all for Sage.  Lehman fell behind 4-2 in set one.  But a kill and an ace from Yaw Eshun tied the score at 4-all.  He led the team with 10 kills in the match.  Sage immediately took the lead and never looked back as they took set one, 25-12.

Set two was nearly a mirror of the opener early on.  Trailing by two, a Sage error and another off a Mentor Mahmuti serve evened the score at 3-3.  Sage took the lead and Lehman never threatened again as the Gators won the second set, 25-15.

Set three was more competitive.  Neither side could mount a strong attack as play went back and forth.  Sage would lead by no more than five, with a Nam Ho ace from Lehman making the score, 22-19 late.  Sage rallied off three straight points and took the match.

The second match of the day saw Lehman fall to the Gothic Knights, 3-2 in five sets.  The scores went 12-25, 25-23, 25-23, 20-25 and 15-13.  Peter Veljovic posted a double-double of 23 kills and 19 kills for the Lightning.  Eshun also had 19 kills and 13 digs, while Jose Bautista gave out 45 assists.  Xayveon Williams also totaled ten kills.

Lehman took set one thanks to an 8-0 run that took the score from 2-2 to 10-2.  Mahmuti served during the run, Eshun picked up a pair of kills and a block and Dominique Herrera added another kill.  The set went to the Lightning on an Eshun service ace.

Sets two and three went to NJCU by identical 25-23 scores.  Lehman trailed 19-13 in set two, but Nam Ho's serve led to five-straight points for the Lightning.  The Gothic Knights used a late rally to take set three.

Needing to take the set to stay in the match, Lehman rallied and took it, 25-20.  Up 19-17 late, the Lightning took control with a 4-0 run to push the lead to six, at 23-17.  Williams and Herrera combined on a pair of blocks, Veljovic had a kill and the Gothic Knights committed an error.  NJCU took the deciding set, 15-10 and took the match 3-2.

The Lehman College men's volleyball team qualified for the CUNYAC playoffs and will face Brooklyn College on Tuesday, April 10, in a quarterfinal match from Brooklyn at 6PM.
