Box Score 2 The Lehman softball team battled against Hunter for the right to face Staten Island in the CUNYAC final earlier and coming away with a 3-1 victory. Lehman then faced CSI in the final making their first appearance in the championship game in 15 years.
The first game started as a pitchers dual with Lehman's Diamond Villegas and Hunter's Caroline Bibula bringing their A game. The contest remained scoreless through four innings before the Lightning struck.
In the fifth Caitlin Vernon delivered a one out triple down the right field line. Andrelina Gil sent her home, for the first run of the game on an infield single.Lehman made it 3-0 in the sixth as Diaz, the CUNY Player of the Year, and Villegas delivered back to back home runs. In the home half of the sixth with two outs the Hawks rallied, manufacturing a run on a walk, a Lightning error and a passed ball. Lehman ace continued her dominance in the circle striking out seven and allowing only four hits.
The win gave the Lightning their only victory over the Hawks in four attempts this season.
In the Championship game, the Lightning fell to CSI 4-1.
In the first inning a Dolphins double and back to back single singles gave CSI 1-0 lead that they wouldn't surrender. In the home third a double and a single extended the lead to 2-0. In the fourth, Lehman cut the lead in half. A walk to Diaz followed by a double to left center by Villegas plated Diaz. After a sacrifice by Paulino the Lightning left Villegas stranded at third. Three doubles in the fifth scored two more runs for the Dolphins giving them a 4-1 lead. Dolphins' pitcher Nicolette Trapani kept the Lightning hitters at bay all afternoon allowing only four hits.
The Lightning ended their season with a record of 15-24. CSI improves to 23-10 and takes the CUNYAC Automatic Qualifier into the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is Monday.
