Women's Soccer Hold Rutgers-Newark To Scoreless Draw In Home Opener

Box Score Bronx, N.Y. – Lehman College women's soccer team (0-0-1) played to a hard fought scoreless draw at the end of regulation and two overtime periods against visiting Rutgers-Newark (0-0-1) in its 2018 season opener at South Field.

Despite being outshot by Scarlet Raiders for the entire match (19 to 7), it was Lightning's backline that held its own against a quality NJAC (New Jersey Athletic Conference) opponent.  Lightning's defense was commanded by sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Gritz, who had a stellar performance making a career-best 11 saves.

Of Lehman's seven total shots from the match, five were on goal.  Two of the Lightning's shots on target where from freshman defender Micaela Canapa which forced Scarlet Raiders goalkeeper Jasmin Erichsen to make a pair key saves to keep the score 0-0 in the first half.

Rutgers-Newark continued to attack in search of the game-winner for remainder of the match, but Lehman held on for the draw.

The Lightning, under fifth-year head coach Casey Melilli, will play its first away game of season next Thursday (Sept. 6th) when they travels to face Skyline Conference opponent Martime College at Reinhart Field with a kick off time of 7:30 pm.
