Bronx, N.Y. – After securing its 11
th consecutive conference postseason berth last week, the Lehman College men's soccer team earned a first round bye at CUNYAC Championships by defeating visiting John Jay College, 1-0, in overtime, on Saturday afternoon at South Field. The Lightning improve to 10-4 overall ledger and 5-1 in CUNYAC, while the Bloodhounds fall to 5-9 mark and 3-4 in conference play.
Lehman outshot John Jay 15-6 during 90 minutes of play, which also had Bloodhounds goalkeeper Sam Hampson needing to make only three saves as the encounter remained scoreless.
In the second minute of overtime, the Lightning posted three consecutive shots inside the Bloodhounds penalty box in which Hampson once again stopped all of them to keep it 0-0.
However, two minutes later, defender
Dominic Dixon scored the game-winner off a rebound save from Hampson off another Lehman shot for the 1-0 final. Lightning goalkeeper
Adrian Magana-Santos made three saves and was credited for his third complete shutout of the season.
Saturday's encounter was also "Senior Day" as midfielders
Troy Callahan,
Chris Mulholland and defender Abdel-Hagg Itito whom all played their final regular season game with Lehman uniform.
The Lightning victory, which was also the third consecutive triumph in overtime this season, secures them a home game in the CUNYAC Championship Semifinals next month.
Lehman will look to clinch the top seed in the conference standings when it travels to take on Medgar Evers College in the regular season finale next Wednesday (October 23
rd).
