Bronx, N.Y. – For the first time since 2014, the Lehman College men's basketball team won the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament Classic after defeating visiting Vassar College, 94-68, in the championship game held at The APEX Main Gym on Sunday afternoon. The Lightning improve to 6-5 overall ledger this season, while the Brewers drop to 4-5 mark.
Lehman took a 10-point lead (48-38) into the intermission after shooting 54 percent from the field, while holding Vassar to just 41%.
In the second stanza, the Lightning went on a 23-12 run in the opening three minutes to take a 21 point lead and would later be up by as many as 28, while shooting 54 percent from the floor.
Forward
Isaiah Geathers paced Lehman scoring 28 points on his way to tournament most valuable player honors. Geathers, who was also named to the all-tournament team added seven rebounds, five assists and two steals for the Lightning. Joining Geathers on the all-tournament selection was Lehman guard
Tommy Batista as he notched 21 points with six assists.
The last time the Lightning lifted the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament first place trophy was on 2014 as they defeated Maine Maritime Academy, 80-54.
The victory on Sunday was also the fifth consecutive for the Lightning as they close out 2019.
Lehman will be back in action on Saturday with its first encounter of 2020 when it travels to take on Medgar Evers College in a CUNYAC match-up set for 3 pm.
