Fort Myers, Fla. – Under second year head coach
Melissa Torres, the Lehman College softball team will begin its 2020 season on Thursday with a pair of encounters at CenturyLink Sports Complex during Gene Cusic Classic. The Lightning will face Grove City College at 9 am, before taking on Finlandia University at 11 am.
Grove City and Finlandia, have already commence their 2020 season, at Gene Cusic Classic, while having 1-5 and 1-9, records, respectively.
Lehman split a twin-bill against Grove City during its first encounters held at Fastpitch Dreams Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on March 1, 2018. After winning the first game, 4-3, the Lightning dropped the nightcap 10-2. Meanwhile, Lehman will face Finlandia for first time.
The Lightning are coming off their ninth consecutive CUNYAC Playoff berth last year after finishing with an 8-4 mark in conference play (13-20 overall record).
Among the Lightning returnees are infielder
Anjolie Alexander, who started all 33 games last year and batted .278 with 18 runs scored and 13 RBI. Another starter returning is outfielder
Stephany Cruz, who also started in all 33 encounters for Lehman while scoring 27 times and drove in 16 runners. On the mound,
Tiffany Adames is back after she saw action in all 33 games (15 as pitcher) as she struck out 37 batters, while posting four victories including a no-hitter at York-NY.
