Despite 20 points and 14 rebounds by
Brianna Barnes the Lehman Lightning women's basketball team let a 59-52 decision slip away from their grasp against a pesky John Jay (7-6:2-1) squad. The Lightning now stand at 2-7 overall and 1-2 in the CUNYAC.
The Lightning jumped out to a 20-12 after the first quarter. With the game tied at 10, the Lightning went on an 8-0 run thanks in part to
Mojisola Shokeye who netted six points during the spurt. Shokeye tallied 14 points on the afternoon. A low scoring second quarter featured only a total of 15 points with the Bloodhounds edging Lehman 8-7 to cut into the Lightning advantage. In the third quarter, once again the Bloodhounds were able to chip away and cut the Lighting lead to 39-35. However, in the final period John Jay outscored Lehman 24-13 to secure the victory.
Lehman led the contest for most of the game and had an 11-point lead on several occasions. However, the Bloodhounds would not go away quietly. They battled back finally tied the game at 52 with 2:46 to play and then where able to keep the Lightning off the scoreboard the remainder of the way.
Ashley Zeolla led the way for the Bloodhounds with 20 points and 12 rebounds while Katie Healy chipped in 14 points.
The Lightning return to action on Wednesday night as they travel to Manhattan to face the Bearcats of Baruch. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 PM.
