The Lehman College baseball team began conference play today at Maimonides Park in Brooklyn splitting contests with John Jay. Lehman took the first game 12-8 but fell in the night cap 7-10. Lehman now stands 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the CUNYAC. The Bloodhounds (1-17:1-1) victory in game two was their first of the year.
The Lightning jumped all over John Jay in the first game. Lehman scored 8 runs in the first inning and then added 1 in the second and three more in third before the Bloodhounds got on the board. John Jay scored two in their half of the third and added one in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh for the final margin of victory.
Randy Polanco earned the victory, his second of the season, pitching five strong innings, striking out seven and surrendering three runs on six hits. Eight different Lightning players recorded hits with
Nomar Rijo recording three RBIs and
Patrick Ortiz adding two.
Despite out hitting the Bloodhounds the Lightning came up short in the game two. Lehman belted out 10 hits including a pair of extra base knocks: a double by
Jeremmy Santos and a triple by
Tran Hennessy. After three scoreless innings, John Jay plated six runs, on two hits and a pair of Lightning errors in the home half of the fourth inning. The Lightning quickly answered back in the fifth with five runs of their own. The Lightning loaded the bases in the fifth as Ransell Pinedo,
Eamon Maher and
Justin Nunez each singled. Ortiz delivered a single up the middle on a 3-2 pitch as each runner advanced a base. Hennessy then proceeded to belt a triple to right center clearing the bases. A
Nomar Rijo singled through the left side to score Hennessy. In the sixth inning the Bloodhounds scored four more times to take a 10-5 lead into the last inning. Lehman was able to score two runs on two hits in their half of the seventh. Santos led off the frame with a double down the right field line, after a fly out and back to back walks to
Glennd Jarrin and
Kyle James the Lightning had the bases loaded. A single to right by Pinedo scored Santos. Maher then hit a sacrifice fly to right plating Jarrin. However, the Lightning stranded two runners to end the game.
David Torres took the loss, however he pitched well for the Lightning giving up six runs, only two earned and striking out four.
Lehman will take the week off to prepare for a home double header next Saturday against conference rival CCNY. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 PM.
