Women’s Basketball Win Home Opener Against Rutgers-Newark

Bronx, N.Y. – A career-high 40 points from guard Heaven Figueroa led the Lehman College women's basketball team to a 70-65 victory, in its home opener, against non-conference opponent Rutgers-Newark, on Tuesday evening, at The APEX Main Gym.  The Lightning go to a 1-1 overall record, while the Scarlet Raiders dropped to a 0-2 mark.

After trailing by four points at the end of the first quarter, Lehman outscored Rutgers-Newark 26 to 16 in the second period to take a six-point advantage at the intermission.  The Lightning then held off any possible Scarlet Raiders comeback in the next two periods for their first victory in four meetings against the New Jersey side.

Along with Figueroa's best scoring performance this season for Lehman, she also grabbed 10 rebounds and six steals.  Forward Mush Muniru notched 16 points with six rebounds, while teammate Emily Kennedy was three assists shy (seven) of a 'triple-double' as she also added 10 points and 14 boards.

The Lightning are back in action on Friday (November 15th) when they travel to Baltimore, Md. to compete in the Renie Amoss Tip-Off Tournament when they take on Lancaster Bible College in the opening round at 8 pm ET.
