The Lehman College Athletic Department is saddened to announce the passing, this week, of Hall of Famer and former CUNYAC Conference Commissioner Ted Hurwitz.
Hurwitz, who retired in 2003 after 12 years at the helm of CUNYAC Conference, was inducted to the Lightning's Hall of Fame in 1999 after coaching two teams to three titles during his tenure at Lehman.
With Hurwitz in charge, the Lehman women's varsity basketball team became Hudson Valley Athletic Conference champions in 1979, and the following year won the New York State Division III crown. In 1989, the Lightning men's tennis team won the CUNYAC title under his direction.
Hurwitz was also part of the Lehman men's basketball coaching staff of Edwin Kramer in which the Lightning won back-to-back CUNYAC Championships during 1973-74 and '74-'75 seasons, respectively.
Also, the enthusiasm, knowledge, and compassion Hurwitz demonstrated during his 22 years of teaching and coaching inspired many of his players to become coaches and provided his physical education students with excellent learning experiences.
Funeral Services for Hurwitz will be on Sunday, December 22nd, 11:00 am ET at Plaza Jewish Community Chapel, located in 630 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10024.
