WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL SPLITS PAIR OF NON-CONFERENCE MATCHES AT ST. JOE'S (LI)

The Lehman College women's volleyball team (11-10 Overall, 4-3 CUNYAC) split a pair of non-conference matches today, falling to the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's College of Long Island by scores of 25-15, 25-23, and 25-21 before defeating the Farmingdale State Rams by scores of 25-10, 25-18, and 25-13 at St. Joseph's College's gymnasium in Patchogue, NY. The Lightning will be home the remainder of the regular season, with their only required travel being in the 2008 CUNYAC Tournament.

In the Lightning's first match of the day, St. Joseph's College of Long Island set the tempo of the match early and never looked back. The Golden Eagles were led by Melissa O'Connell as she put forth a terrific game with a team-high nine kills to go along with three digs. Melissa Yannotta also contributed with five kills, and Allyson Franklin added three kills and 16 digs.

Despite the loss for the Lightning, Lehman was led by standout Gerri-Ann Martin who continued her brilliant season by contributing with 14 kills and nine digs. The polished Crissette Maxwell also put forth a fine performance in a losing cause as she tallied four kills and added 17 digs, and Jillian Acevedo added 12 digs.

In Lehman's second match of the day, the Lightning cruised to an easy three-set victory over the Rams. Martin led the way for Lehman with 10 kills, and Acevedo added five kills and three digs. As a team, the Lightning hit .197. Following the contests, Head Coach Daniel Skilins expressed his thoughts.

“We were able to salvage a game this afternoon, but there are still many things that we have to work on, including finishing plays,” Skilins said. “We have two conference matches left and then we're hosting a CUNYAC quarterfinal match, and if we want to be at our best, we need to correct some flaws in our games, and I believe we still have some time to do that.”

The Lightning will return to action on Tuesday evening as Lehman welcomes the New York City College of Technology Yellow Jackets to the APEX Center, with match time scheduled for 7:00pm.
