The Lehman College women's volleyball team (13-10 Overall, 5-3 CUNYAC) won for the fifth time in six tries, defeating non-conference opponent SUNY Purchase by scores of 25-21, 25-13, and 25-12 Wednesday evening at the APEX Center in the Bronx.
Gerri-Ann Martin once again led the way for the Lightning as she posted a match-high 10 kills to go along with four digs. Setter Lisa Jagdeo also did her part in the match by tallying a match-high 13 assists to go along with four kills and three digs. Libero Dilma Marte led the team in digs with 11 and service aces with seven, and Christy Pasqualicchio notched five service aces. Following the victory, Head Coach Daniel Skilins was happy to see his team pick up the victory, but he knows the job isn't done yet.
“The team played with a lot of energy and it seemed like they had a lot of fun,” Skilins said. “SUNY Purchase matched up with us tonight and they gave us a scare in the first set but we were able to hold them off. After the sluggish start I had to call a quick timeout and I told the team that we have to play like we wanted to win this match and that's what we did. When we're giving 100 percent out there, we roll through points, and I feel if we bring our A game and our mental focus is there, then we can shock people in the tournament.”
In a losing effort for SUNY Purchase Panthers, Lindsay Froman led her team with six kills while also posting team-highs in service aces with three and digs with 11. Mickaela Olson also chipped in as she had 12 assists.
The Lightning will return to action on Friday evening as Lehman stays home to battle Montclair State University, with match time scheduled for 6:00pm.
