The Lehman College women's tennis team (1-4 Overall, 1-1 CUNYAC) picked up their first victory of the season Thursday afternoon as they defeated the City College of New York Beavers by a score of 9-0.
The Lightning took control of the match from the very start, notching victories in all three doubles contests. At No. 1 doubles, Lehman's standout combination of Evauna Neville and Aurora Peters got the job done, defeating CCNY's pair of Sumi Sarkar and Joan Park by a score of 8-0. Also, at No. 2 doubles, it was the Lightning's duo of Natalee Smith and Gabriela Harewood downing the Beavers' team of Natalya Mishchenko and Naydine Johney by a score of 9-0. Lehman captured the No. 3 doubles match via default.
When play switched to singles, it was much of the same for the Lightning. Neville, Peters, and Harewood picked up victories at No. 1, 2, and 3 singles, respectively, all by scores of 6-0, 6-0. At No. 4 doubles, Smith turned back Mishchenko 6-0, 6-1, and in the most competitive flight of the day, Dalia Rodriguez got past Johney by scores of 6-1 and 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Finally at No. 6 flight singles, Amaia Liriano downed Shirley Valerio 6-1, 6-0.
Following the victory, Head Coach Zack Davis was very pleased with his squad.
“It feels great to get that first victory of the season,” Davis said. “We've worked so hard, and it's satisfying to see our hard work finally pay off. Now it's all about staying consistent and fighting through matches. Hopefully there are more victories on the way.”
Lehman will return to action on Friday as they travel to Bronxville, NY to battle Sarah Lawrence College in a non-conference match, with match-time scheduled for 5:00pm.
