The Lehman College women's tennis team (1-6 Overall, 1-1 CUNYAC) dropped a non-conference match, falling to the Kean University Cougars (3-2 Overall, 0-1 NJAC) by a score of 9-0 Monday afternoon at the Kean University Alumni Stadium Tennis Courts in Union, New Jersey.
The afternoon started with doubles competition. At No. flight 1 doubles, Kean University's team of Lisette LaForge and Katherine Arauz defeated Lehman's pair of Evauna Neville and Aurora Peters 8-1. The No. 2 doubles tandem of Katherine Stuthers and Radhee Sheth of the Cougars defeated Gabriela Harewood and Natalee Smith of the Lightning by a score of 8-1. Finally, at No. 3 doubles, Lehman's combination of Dalia Rodriguez and Amaia Liriano couldn't handle Kean's duo of Andrea Grahlmann and Michelle Tofel, falling to the pair by a score of 8-0.
When play moved to singles, the matches were highly-contested, but Kean University would prevail by recording a sweep of Lehman. In No. 1 singles action, LaForge got past Neville 7-6, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Katherine Arauz downed Peters 6-3, 7-6, and at No.3 singles, Christina Cohen defeated Harewood 6-3, 7-6. The Cougars would also take the final three singles sets, putting an exclamation point on an impressive victory.
Following the loss, Lehman College Head Coach Zack Davis expressed his thoughts about how his team played.
“Kean University is a great team” said coach Davis. “We had four tough singles matches and I'm proud of my young team's effort. Hopefully we'll bounce back in a hurry.”
The Lightning will return to action on Thursday afternoon when they play the New York City of Technology Yellow Jackets, with match-time at the APEX Tennis Courts scheduled for 3:30pm.
