The Lehman College women's volleyball team (6-2 Overall, 3-1 CUNYAC) defeated the York College Cardinals (2-9 Overall, 2-2 CUNYAC) in a heated CUNYAC match on Tuesday night at the APEX Center. The Lightning defeated the Cardinals by scores 25-14, 25-12, and 25-23.
Lehman College was cruising through the first two sets before holding off the Cardinals late in the third set. The Lightning had strong efforts by freshman Gerri-Ann Martin who led the way with 11 kills, three service aces and eight digs. Also, fellow freshman Lisa Jagdeo once again put forth a solid effort as she tallied a match-high 14 assists to go along with five digs and three service aces. Sophomore Crissette Maxwell added 12 digs and standout server Jennifer Winkler had eight service aces. Following the victory, Head Coach Daniel Skilins gave his thoughts on his team's fast start in 2008.
“We came out like lightning in games one and two and we need to exert our energy consistently throughout the entire match,” Skilins said. “That being said, we are 6-2 and I am very happy with the outcome of this match. Last year, it took us a while before we won our sixth game. I have high standards for this program and I believe the girls are on the same page with me in terms of trying to satisfy those standards. We're looking forward to playing Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday.”
Despite the loss for the Cardinals, Charlina Gallegos totaled three kills to go along with seven digs, five assists, and three service aces. Stephanie Ostin led the team in digs with nine.
Lehman will return to action on Saturday afternoon as the Lightning stay home to play the Mt. St Vincent Dolphins, with match time scheduled for 1:00pm.
