WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SEES FIVE PLAYERS SCORE IN DOUBLE FIGURES IN WIN OVER COUGARS

Box Score

The Lehman College women's basketball team (9-8 Overall, 4-2 CUNYAC) picked up a hard-fought conference victory, downing the Cougars of Medgar Evers College (7-10 Overall, 2-4 CUNYAC) by a score of 68-65 Wednesday evening in Brooklyn, New York. The Lightning held a 17 point advantage early in the second half and held off a late Medgar Evers rally to secure the win.

The Lightning received contributions from a number of different sources in the victory, as five players scored in double figures on the night. Lehman was led by senior standout Sally Nnamani who paced her squad by posting a double-double, as she recorded game-highs of 15 points and 16 rebounds. Fellow senior Monique Sampson also notched a double-double by netting 13 points and snatching 12 rebounds, while junior point guard Tonisha Kirby scored 11 points, dished nine assists, grabbed seven rebounds, and tallied three steals. Finally, it was junior Kelsey Ash and senior Whittney Barnes scoring 11 points apiece in the win.

A Barnes jumper 2:05 into the second stanza gave Lehman its biggest lead of the game, 42-25, but the Cougars made life difficult for the Lightning from that point forward. Medgar Evers cut the Lightning's lead to three points on three different occasions, but Lehman College was able to persevere, as the team never lost its composure or the lead.

Lehman College used good ball movement in the game, as the team collectively dished 17 assists compared to only eight for Medgar Eves. The Lightning also tallied 15 steals as a team, with the Cougars recording nine. Each team snatched 57 rebounds apiece, and the Lightning won the turnover battle, committing 23 miscues while forcing 31 Medgar Evers mistakes.

In a losing effort for the Cougars, Shakimba Pierre put forth a brilliant performance, posting a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Shauntelle Nelson netted 18 points while snatching nine rebounds, dishing four assists and recording three steals. Finally, it was Tabrese Harris scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 caroms.

The Lightning will return to action on Saturday afternoon as the team returns home to the APEX Center to battle the City College of New York Beavers in CUNYAC action, with game-time scheduled for 2:15pm.
