The Lehman College Women's Basketball team (10-8 Overall, 5-2 CUNYAC) picked up their second consecutive conference win as the team defeated City College of New York Beavers (9-8 Overall, 2-6 CUNYAC) by a score of 79-63 Saturday afternoon at the APEX Center in the Bronx.
The Lightning were led by senior standout Sally Nnamani as she put forth one of the best all-around performances of her four-year career, as she netted a whopping 27 points to go along with 21 rebounds and seven blocks. Junior guard Kelsey Ash hit four three-pointers, including two key treys in the second half while netting 16 points for the night. The feisty guard also grabbed six rebounds and dished four assists. Senior forward Monique Sampson scored 13 points and snatched nine rebounds while Tonisha Kirby also chipped in with 13 points and nine assists.
Lehman, leading by just one point as the teams headed into the locker room at halftime, pulled away in the second half. The Lightning used terrific ball movement on the evening, dishing out 19 assists compared to just 10 for the Beavers. Lehman also out-rebounded the beavers 63-44. Lehman College also connected on seven shots from downtown as a squad while City College of New York came up empty from three-point range, missing all eight of its attempts from beyond the arc. Following the game, Head Coach Eric Harrison was pleased with the team's performance.
“The game was back and forth in the first half, but I felt like we made good adjustments and made life more difficult for CCNY in the second half,” Harrison said. “Our tenacity on the boards in the game's final 20 minutes was encouraging to see, and I felt as though we brought great toughness in the second stanza. Now we'll focus on the Yellow Jackets on Wednesday.”
Despite the loss for the Beavers, sensation Anika Rivera led her team with 16 points, three rebounds, and eight assists while Ashley Straughn helped with 15 points and nine rebounds. Finally, it was Donika Rexhepi chipping in with 11 points and four rebounds.
The Lightning will return to court on Wednesday evening as they join the men to play against New York City College of Technology in a doubleheader at the APEX Center in the Bronx. Game time is scheduled for 7:30pm.
