The Lehman College women's basketball team (12-8 overall, 7-2 CUNYAC) picked up their fourth consecutive conference victory as the team defeated Brooklyn College (14-6 Overall, 6-3 conference) by the score of 76-55 Saturday afternoon at the Roosevelt gymnasium in Brooklyn, New York. Despite senior standout Sally Nnamani sitting out the contest due to injury, the Lightning's didn't miss a beat in nailing down another win.
Leading the way for the Lightning was junior point guard Tonisha Kirby who posted a game-high of 24 points (8-17 FG) to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard Barbara Febus also helped as she netted 14 points (6-7 FG), dished six assists and snatched five rebounds. Senior forward Whittney Barnes chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds and four steals, while senior Monique Sampson helped with nine points, a game-high of 13 rebounds and three steals. After the game, Head Coach Eric Harrison gave his thoughts on the victory.
"Our team played a very good game today on both sides of the court," Harrison said. "Our defense was very impressive, and I liked our tenaciousness in that area. We forced 31 turnovers, and that was a big key in this game. Offensively, we had a lot of different players contribute, and right now the team is hitting on all cylinders and just having fun. We're trying to put ourselves in the best possible position heading into the tournament in three weeks, so hopefully we'll continue to get better and play well."
Lehman's defense was solid in the victory, holding Brooklyn to 28.6 percent shooting in the second half and a 38.2 percent clip for the game. The Lightning won the turnover battle by 13 (Bridges committed 31 miscues while Lehman only had 18 turnovers). The Lightning also shot the ball well, hitting on 46 percent of their attempts.
Despite the loss for Brooklyn College, Priscilla Ramirez posted 20 points (5-9 FT), 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Standout Amber Gordon netted 14 points (6-10 FG) and tallied three steals while Christina Belfiore chipped in with eight points and two rebounds.
The Lightning will return to the court looking for their fifth consecutive victory as the team will take on the College of Saint Elizabeth in a non-conference game, with tip-off scheduled for 5:30pm.
