The Lehman College women's volleyball team (6-7 Overall, 3-2 CUNYAC) participated in the Kean University Invitational Saturday afternoon at Kean's Harewood Arena in Union, NJ. The Lightning lost to SUNY Farmingdale in five sets (25-11, 25-22, 22-25, 23-25, 17-25) and lost to Kean University in three sets (19-25, 24-26, 18-25) before defeating Brooklyn College in three (25-10, 25-21, 25-21).
The Lightning's suffered a tough loss in their first match of the day, as Lehman built a 2-0 set lead before dropping three consecutive sets to the Rams in suffering a loss. Despite the defeat, standout Gerri-Ann Martin put forth a stellar performance, tallying a match-high 21 kills and seven digs. Jennifer Winkler added 11 kills and two digs, and setter Lisa Jagdeo recorded a match-high 48 assists. Lehman hit .228 for the match compared to .110 for SUNY Farmingdale. In the victory for the Rams, Dominique Cunningham recorded 16 kills and 21 digs.
In Lehman's second match of the day against the host school, Kean University, the Cougars hit .181 compared to just .049 for Lehman. Despite the loss for the Lightning, Martin had 12 kills while Jagdeo added 17 assists and junior Jillian Acevedo tallied seven digs. In the victory for the Cougars, Tara Richey added seven kills and Katie Schuh and Jamie Sacco chipped in with six kills apiece.
Three times was a charm for the Lightning, as Lehman stifled Brooklyn College 3-0 in their final match of the day. The match did not serve as a CUNYAC contest, but for the second time this season, the Lightning turned back the Bridges convincingly. In a winning effort for Lehman College, it was Martin again pacing her squad with 14 kills, six digs, and three service aces. Freshman Racine Brown had four block solos, and Jagdeo added 28 assists.
The Lightning will return to action Monday evening as Lehman will battle Polytechnic University in a non-conference match at the APEX Center, with start time scheduled for 7:00pm.
