SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAMS PUT FORTH HEARTY EFFORT IN LOSSES TO ADELPHI UNIVERSITY

The Lehman College men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to the pool on Tuesday evening, participating in their home-opening meet against non-conference opponent Adelphi University. The Lightning women (0-3 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC) fell to the Panthers by a score of 127-67, while Lehman's men (1-2 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC) lost to Adelphi by a closer final of 128-101.

On the women's side, the Lightning certainly had some very encouraging performances despite the loss. Veteran standout Luisa Garcia set a new school record in the 1000-yard freestyle event, completing the competition in a time of 12:48.35. In addition, Yudelka Espinal broke two records. In the 200 IM, she finished in a time of 2:37.43, and she also completed the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1:01.91. Finally, it was Basilisa Alonso finishing the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:17.78, a time that is five seconds faster than any other CUNYAC swimmer in that event this season, and is just seconds away from a school record.

Despite the loss for the Lehman men, the Lightning dominated in 200-yard freestyle event. Ivan Srdanovic won the competition by finishing in a time of 2:00.60, and he was followed in that event by Orlando Urena who finished second with a time of 2:04.65 and Shqiprim Shala who placed third at 2:06.60. Following the meet, Lehman College head coach Peter Kiernan gave his thoughts on his teams' performances.

“With all of the fast swims this evening, I'm still more impressed with the efforts of our first year swimmers to the program as they continue to improve their skill and fitness levels.,” Kiernan said.  “By the time the team starts the conference meet schedule, they'll be race ready and much, much faster.”

The swimming and diving teams now travel to Wayne, NJ to battle the William Paterson University in non-conference competition on Saturday afternoon, with meet-time scheduled for 1:00pm.
