WOMEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS CONSOLATION GAME OF NYU TIP-OFF TOURNEY TO DOLPHINS

Box Score

The Lehman College women's basketball team (0-2 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC) lost their second consecutive game to start the 2009-2010 campaign, as they fell to the Dolphins of the College of Mount Saint Vincent (1-1 Overall, 0-0 Skyline) by a score of 68-64 in the consolation game of the NYU Tip-Off Tournament in a game played at NYU's Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in New York, NY.

Despite the loss for the Lightning, newcomer Melissa St. Louis led the way by scoring a team-high 19 points to go along with 10 assists, nine rebounds and two steals in a solid all-around game for the Brooklyn, NY native. In addition, Barbara Febus added 13 points (4-8 FG) and four rebounds and center Dorothy Hunte contributed with 10 points and seven boards. Freshman Tiana Rosa also added 12 rebounds and five assists as well. Lehman shot 39.3 percent from the floor compared to just 25 percent for the Dolphins, but miscues and missed free throws hurt Lehman, as the Lightning committed 30 turnovers on the evening and shot just 13-20 from the charity stripe. Following the loss for Lehman College, head coach Eric Harrison seemed eager to look ahead.

“The sign of a good team is that you don't dwell on a pair of defeats,” Harrison said. “It's a long season, and it's still early. Our players are still learning to play as a cohesive unit. We have a lot of newcomers and they are continuing to get used to one another. With that said, we had an opportunity to win this evening's game, and we couldn't do it. We'll refocus and come out ready to play on Tuesday.”

In the victory for the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Karissa Koerner led the Dolphins with a game-high 20 points to go along with four rebounds and four steals. Courtney Heesemann recorded a double-double as she netted 14 points and snatched 21 boards, and Jill Brady was a spark off of the bench, dropping in 17 points in 22 minutes. The Dolphins connected on 13 of their 15 attempts from the charity stripe in the victory.

The Lightning will return to action this Tuesday evening as they will play their home opener against non-conference opponent SUNY New Paltz at the APEX Center, with game-time scheduled for 5:15pm. Earlier in the day, beginning at 3:00pm, there will a Prep rally that will be held in the auxiliary and main gymnasiums of the APEX Center and all fans are welcome to attend and be part of the excitement. There will be games and giveaways at the rally, and some of the 2009-2010 Lehman College athletic teams will be introduced as well in what promises to be a fun day for all involved.
