As a new month arrived, so did too a victory for the Lehman College women's basketball team (1-3 Overall, 1-0 CUNYAC) as the Lightning out-willed the Beavers of the City College of New York (1-4 Overall, 0-1 CUNYAC) by a score of 58-49 Tuesday evening in a CUNYAC contest played at the APEX Center in the Bronx.
In the victory for the Lightning, Lehman College was led by freshman center Tiana Rosa who put forth a stellar all-around game in contributing on both sides of the floor. The 6'1 standout connected on six of her 11 shots from the floor, netting a total of 12 points to go along with nine rebounds, four blocks, and a pair of steals. Newcomer Melissa St. Louis also contributed despite struggling from the floor (6-23 FG), as she netted a game-high 18 points to go along with 14 rebounds and two steals, and senior Barbara Febus finished the evening with seven points, 14 boards, and a pair of assists. Following the victory, Head Coach Eric Harrison gave his thoughts.
“It was very important for us to come out here this evening and grab a victory, and that is what we did,” Harrison said. “CCNY played us tough, and there certainly are things we have to work on, but hopefully a win like this will get us going and help us move in the right direction. We're off to a good start in conference play, and we'll hope to carry this momentum into John Jay on Thursday.”
Despite the loss for the Beavers, the City College of New York was led by Taryn VanEsselstyn who put forth team-highs of 14 points and 17 rebounds for her unit while also tallying a pair of steals. In addition, it was Rynae Rasley contributing with six points, nine rebounds, and two assists.
Both teams struggled shooting the basketball on the evening. The Lightning made good on just 32.4 percent of their shots (24-74) while the Beavers hit on only 28.1 percent of their attempts (18-64). Lehman hit just eight of their 24 free throws, CCNY made good on just nine of their 25 attempts from the charity stripe. Lehman won the turnover battle, committing 26 miscues compared to 32 for CCNY, and the teams snatched 57 rebounds apiece.
Lehman will return to action Thursday evening as the Lightning travel to the Doghouse to battle the Bloodhounds of John Jay College in a CUNYAC contest, with game-time scheduled for 5:00pm.
