The Lehman College women's basketball team (2-3 Overall, 2-0 CUNYAC) picked up their second consecutive victory, defeating the Bloodhounds of John Jay College (0-5 Overall, 0-2 CUNYAC) in convincing fashion by a score of 69-42 Thursday evening in a CUNYAC contest played at the Doghouse in New York, NY.
In the victory for the Lightning, Lehman was led by junior center Dorothy Hunte who put forth a dominating effort as she posted a double-double, netting game-highs in points with 26 and rebounds with 13. In addition, it was senior guard Kelsey Ash contributing with 11 points, four rebounds, and four steals, and Tiana Rosa had a nice all-around game with six points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks. Melissa St. Louis added 10 points and eight rebounds, and the Lightning shot 39.5 percent from the field for the game (27-74). Following the victory, Head Coach Eric Harrison complimented his group.
“I like the energy that we came out with tonight, and it was great to pick up our second consecutive victory, especially in a hostile environment,” Harrison said. “This was John Jay's homecoming day, so we knew it was going to be a packed house, and I really like the way our players came out and went after it tonight. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going heading into Saturday's game.”
Despite the loss for the Bloodhounds, it was Dominique Grice contributing with 18 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Chantelle Smith also added seven points, 12 rebounds, and five steals, and Jessica Lirio netted nine points and snatched six rebounds.
The Lightning out-rebounded the Bloodhounds 55-50 and won the turnover battle as well, committing just 14 miscues compared to 28 for John Jay. Lehman also dished 18 assists compared to 10 for John Jay, and the Lightning also swatted nine shots compared to two for John Jay.
The Lightning will return to action Saturday evening as Lehman will take on Hamilton College in a non-conference game as part of the Salisbury Optimist Classic Tournament in Salisbury, Maryland, with game-time for the contest scheduled for 6:00pm.
