The Lehman College softball team (2-18 Overall, 0-6 CUNYAC) dropped three games this afternoon – including the continuation of a contest against the Brooklyn College Bridges (4-15 Overall, 3-8 CUNYAC) that was halted earlier in the month. The Bridges defeated the Lightning, 15-4. Then, in the regularly scheduled non-conference doubleheader featuring Lehman College and St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn, the Bears defeated the Lightning twice, by scores of 14-8 and 8-2.
The continuation of a halted Lehman-Brooklyn contest from back on April 7th started things off just after 1:30pm. The game resumed with the Bridges holding a 9-4 after three innings of play. In the top of the fourth inning, Brooklyn College plated a run against Lehman pitcher Natalie Martinez when, with runners on first and third and one person out, the Bridges' Antoinette Brown reached base via an error by Lightning shortstop Lakeisha Gordon. Ruth Perez, who walked earlier in the inning, scored on the play, and Brooklyn held a 10-4 lead. Martinez would escape further trouble by retiring the next two batters.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Lightning threatened but failed to score. The first two batters for Lehman would reach against Brooklyn hurler Nicole Bianco as Victoria McMahon would single to right field and Gordon would pick up an infield single. After Vania Cadet struck out, Chastity Cruz would walk, loading the bases. Martinez would then strike out swinging, and then Monique Sampson would hit a drive to centerfield that would be caught, ending the Lehman threat.
The Bridges would tack on five more runs in the top of the fifth innings, a frame that was highlighted by a two-RBI single by Brown. Miriam Alicea also had an RBI single in Brooklyn's five run-fifth inning. After four and a half innings of play, Brooklyn College led 15-4. The Lightning failed to score in the bottom of the fifth, essentially ending the game.
Nicole Bianco of Brooklyn College picked up the victory, hurling a five-inning complete game and allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits while walking eight batters and striking out eight. Danielle Maresca finished 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, three runs scored and three RBI's. For Lehman, McMahon took the loss by pitching two innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on two hits and five walks while striking out two. Offensively for the Lightning, Genesis Batista finished 1-for-2 with a single and two RBI's.
Game one between the Lightning and the Bears featured a pitching match-up of Lehman's Victoria McMahon and St. Joseph's College's Lisa Scheer. After both teams failed to score in the first inning, the Bears would take advantage of two Lehman errors in the second inning to plate three runs. With runners on first and second base and one out, McMahon struck out Carissa Cancemi and the Bears' Jackie Marinello would steal third on the play and eventually score when Lehman's Cadet would throw the ball into left field. At this point, St. Joseph's led 1-0. A Gordon error and a passed ball by Cadet would account for the other two runs in the inning. After an inning and a half, St. Joseph's led 3-0.
The Lightning would threaten in the second inning, putting a runner on second base with one out, but they would fail to push across a run. Scheer would lead off the top of the third inning with a single to center field, and she would eventually come around to score on a sacrifice fly by Alyson Chiaramonte to increase St. Joseph's lead to 4-0. McMahon escaped the inning without allowing any more runs.
In the bottom of the third inning, two consecutive one-out singles by Gordon and Cadet gave the Lightning runners on first and second for Sampson. After the runners moved up on a wild pitch, Sampson hit a sacrifice fly to the shortstop to cut Lehman's deficit to 4-1. Martinez then reached via en error, as Cadet came around to score, and the Lightning then trailed 4-2 before the Bears escaped with no further damage.
After St. Joseph's College tacked on a run in the top of the fourth inning to make it 5-2, the Lightning rallied for three runs to tie the game at five apiece in a frame that was highlighted by an RBI double by McMahon and two St. Joseph's errors. After four innings of play, the game was tied at five.
After both teams failed to score in the fifth inning, the Bears broke things open in the top of the sixth inning by plating six runs. Catherine Norris had the lone hit in the inning, a two-RBI single. In the frame, the Bears drew four walks and took advantage of two Lehman errors in doing a majority of their damage. After five and a half innings of play, the Bears led 11-5 and never looked back, eventually going on to win, 14-8.
Lisa Scheer picked up the victory for St. Joseph's, hurling a complete game and allowing eight runs (five earned) on 10 hits while walking none and striking out six batters. Offensively, Jackie Marinello went 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored, and an RBI. McMahon took the loss for Lehman. Bright spots for the Lightning at the dish included the performance of Vania Cadet as she went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Natalie Martinez who went 1-for-4 with a double, run scored, and an RBI.
In game two of the Lehman-St. Joseph's doubleheader, Victoria McMahon got the start again as she faced the Bears' Alyson Chiarmonte. St. Joseph's set the tone for the game early, plating five runs in the first inning and never looking back, eventually winning the game by a score of 8-2 in five innings. The umpires called the game after five due to darkness.
Chiarmonte pitched five strong frames for the Bears, allowing two runs (earned) on five hits while walking two batters and striking out nine. Offensively for St. Joseph's, Theresa Mendez went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, two runs scored, and an RBI. McMahon took the loss for the Lightning. Offensively for Lehman, Genesis Batista finished 2-for-3, smashing a pair of singles to right field.
The Lightning will return to action tomorrow afternoon as the team travels to Queens, NY for a conference doubleheader with the York College Cardinals, with the first game beginning at 3:00pm.
