The Lehman College softball team (4-24 Overall, 2-10 CUNYAC) dropped a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon, falling to Sarah Lawrence College by scores of 17-10 and 13-5 at the South Field in the Bronx on Senior Day.
Prior to the game, Lehman's Director of Athletics, Dr. Martin L. Zwiren, Sports Information Director Stephen Spagnoli, and the Lehman College softball family took a few moments to honor senior Christy Pasqualicchio in a special ceremony celebrating her tenure with the team. Pasqualicchio was presented with a commemorative plaque for her years of dedication and service for the softball squad, and Head Coach Joanna Quirindongo addressed the player that she has coached for two seasons with some heartfelt words.
When play did get underway, game one's pitching match-up featured Natalie Martinez of Lehman College taking on Sarah Lawrence's Kaitie Rau. After the Gryphons failed to score in the bottom of the first inning, Lehman plated three runs in the bottom of the frame to take an early 3-0 lead. The inning was highlighted by an RBI double by Pasqualicchio.
In the top of the second inning, an RBI double by Ariel Rogers and an RBI single by Rau brought Sarah Lawrence to within 3-2. The Lightning answered back by scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 5-2 lead as Rau was chased from the game and replaced by Tammy Johnson for the Gryphons.
In the top of the third inning, Sarah Lawrence took the lead, plating four runs in the frame. Sarah DeSocio led things off with a homerun, and a two-RBI single by John and an RBI base-knock by Elisbaeth Dupuis accounted for the other runs in the inning.
In the fifth inning, with the Gryphons leading 8-6, the Lightning would tie the score as Whittney Barnes would pick up an RBI single and then score via an error. After five innings of play, the game was tied at eight apiece. The Gryphons, however, essentially would put the game away in the top of the sixth by plating six runs and taking a 14-8 lead. In the seventh, Sarah Lawrence scored three more runs to up their lead to 17-8, eventually going on to win the game 17-10.
Tammy Johnson picked up the victory for the Gryphons. Offensively, DeSocio finished the game 3-for-5 with a homerun, two runs scored, a walk, and three RBI's. Maryn Wright went 2-for-5 at the dish with two runs scored, two RBI's, and a stolen base. Natalie Martinez took the loss for Lehman. At the dish for the Lightning, Lakeisha Gordon went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, a pair of walks, two stolen bases, and four runs scored.
The second game of the afternoon featured the Gryphons' Wright against Victoria McMahon for Lehman College. The turning point of this game came in the top of the second inning when Sarah Lawrence College, down 2-1 in the contest, scored eight runs in the frame to take a commanding 9-2 lead. McMahon was relieved by Martinez for Lehman after she allowed nine runs (seven earned) on four walks and two hits in an inning-plus of work.
The 9-2 deficit would be too much for the Lightning to overcome as Sarah Lawrence College would eventually pick up an eight-run (13-5) victory in five innings of play. Wright picked up the victory for the Gryphons, hurling a five-inning complete game and allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out three.
