The Lehman College women's tennis team (3-3 Overall, 0-2 CUNYAC) dropped a non-conference match Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Cougars of Kean University (1-3 Overall, 0-2 NJAC) by a score of 8-1 at the APEX Tennis Courts in the Bronx.
The Cougars set the tone for the match early by dominating in doubles play. At No. 1 doubles, with was Kean University's combination of Lauren Petrucelli and Lisette LaForge turning back Lehman's standout duo of Evauna Neville and Aurora Peters by a score of 8-3. No. 2 doubles saw the Cougars' Miriam Penafiel and Alleyna Alleyne defeat the Lightning's pair of Gabrela Harewood and Melissa Hemick, 8-1, and Kean's Jessica Oquendo and Annie Ramos silenced Lehman's Heoe Eun Kwon and Natalee Smith, 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
When play switched over to singles, Kean University grabbed five of the six singles sets to account for the 8-1 final score. No. 1 singles saw LaForge defeat Neville, 6-4, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, it was Petrucelli turning back Peters, 6-0, 6-1. Alleyne defeated Harewood, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Also, at No. 4 singles, Oquendo downed Hemick, 6-3, 2-6, 4-1, and Penafiel beat Kwon, 2-6, 7-5, 10-3 at No. 5 singles. Lehman College's lone victory on the day came at No. 6 singles in a thriller, as Smith bounced Ramos, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.
The Lightning will return to action Thursday afternoon as Lehman will battle the Medgar Evers Cougars in a CUNYAC match at the APEX Tennis Courts, with start time scheduled for 4:00pm.
