The Lehman College women's volleyball team (3-4 Overall, 3-1 CUNYAC) broke its two-game losing streak and picked up an important conference victory, defeating the York College Cardinals (4-7 Overall, 2-2 CUNYAC) by scores of 25-20, 25-12, and 28-26 Thursday evening at the York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, NY.
Gerri-Ann Martin turned in a big effort for Lehman in the victory, recording 17 kills to go along with six digs. Standout setter Lisa Jagdeo also put forth a tremendous performance 32 assists and veteran Jillian Acevedo added 32 digs to lead the Lightning. Following the match, Head Coach Wolfgang Lucena praised his group.
“We came ready to play tonight, and we picked up another big victory in league play,” Lucena said. “Our group is continuing to get better each and every time it takes the floor, and it's something we're very excited about. Now we'll have six days before our next match, so we'll work on things in practice and come out ready for our next opponent.”
In a losing effort for the York College Cardinals, Irma Ruilova led the team with eight kills, while also recording eight digs. Charlina Gallegos finished with a team-high ten digs and 12 assists.
The Lightning recorded 14 service aces on the evening compared to just three for the Cardinals. Lehman also had 34 assists to York's 15, and the Lightning also tallied 38 kills compared to only 16 for York College.
The Lehman College women's volleyball team will return to action on Tuesday evening as the Lightning will battle the City College of New York Beavers in a CUNYAC match, with start time scheduled for 7:00pm.
