The Lehman College women's basketball team (5-11, 3-2 CUNYAC) dropped a CUNYAC contest on Friday evening, falling to the Bearcats of Baruch College (13-3 Overall, 6-0 CUNYAC) by a score of 84-54 at the ARC Arena in New York, NY.
The Bearcats used a fine all-around effort in claiming the victory, as four players scored in double figures in the win. Baruch was led by Megan Bouwens who put forth a tremendous effort, finishing with a game-high 23 points as well as 11 rebounds in 27 minutes of action. The standout connected on nine of her 17 shot attempts. Anika Sierk scored 18 points and snatched four rebounds, Kalea Davis finished with 17 points and 11 caroms, and Christina Kelly contributed with 11 points.
Despite the loss for the Lightning, Lehman received another fine performance from Leslie Mencia as she posted a double-double, netting a team-high 21 points on eight-of-18 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds. Dorothy Hunte and Melissa St. Louis also added nine points apiece for the Lightning.
Baruch College had their way on the boards, out-rebounding the Lightning by a margin of 52-35, including a 23-13 clip on the offensive glass. The Bearcats also won the turnover battle, committing 21 miscues while forcing 25 Lehman mistakes. Baruch dished 18 assists compared to eight for Lehman College, and the Bearcats also sank 16 of their 22 attempts from the charity stripe, while the Lightning made good on seven of their 13 attempts.
The Bearcats held a 30-19 edge at halftime, but that lead progressively grew once the second half started, and Baruch College connected on 50 percent of their shot attempts (21-42) in the second stanza to help them run away with the contest. For the game, Baruch shot 44.4 percent from the floor while Lehman connected on 34.4 percent from the field for the game.
The Lightning will return to action on Wednesday evening as Lehman will battle the Medgar Evers Cougars in conference play at the APEX Center, with game-time scheduled for 5:00pm.
