WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM TURNED BACK BY BULLDOGS IN OVERTIME ON ALUMNI DAY

The Lehman College women's basketball team (8-12 Overall, 6-3 CUNYAC) dropped a hard-fought CUNYAC contest on Alumni Day at the APEX Center, falling to the the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (11-8 Overall, 6-3 CUNYAC) by a score of 77-71 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.

 

Prior to the contest, the annual Alumni Day game took place. Women's basketball players of the past who played in the alumni contest included Sally Nnamani, Shirley Arrieta, Ivelisse Rosario, Kimberly Kelly, and Maria Loor.

 

Despite the loss for the Lightning, it was junior forward Leslie Mencia netted 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds and three steals, while Paula Robinson also tallied 14 points while grabbing four rebounds. Junior guard Melissa St. Louis also chipped in with 13 points while snatching seven rebounds. Following the game, head coach Eric Harrison gave his thoughts on the alumni game and his team's game as well.

 

“It's always very special to have our players from the past come back and play in a game with their former teammates,” Harrison said. “The ladies who played in the alumni game had a lot of fun, and the alumni game always serves as a treat to our fans. As for our loss today, we held a 61-57 lead with just under two minutes to play, but missed free throws and few defenses lapses ultimately came back to haunt us. We'll shake this one off and be ready for John Jay on Wednesday.”

 

In the victory for the Bulldogs, senior guard Priscilla Ramirez scored a game-high 22 points while grabbing 14 rebounds and dishing eight assists in 40 minutes of action. Justine O'Callahan dropped in 18 points will snatching four rebounds, and senior forward Frances Lyons helped with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

 

The Lightning out-rebounded the Bulldogs by a margin of 55-48, but Brooklyn College edged Lehman in every other category. Brooklyn shot 41.6 percent from the field (32-77) compared to a 37.7 percent clip for Lehman (29-77). The Bulldogs shot 52.6 percent from the charity stripe (10-19) while the Lightning connected on 47.6 percent of their free throws (10-21). In addition, the Bulldogs won the turnover battle, committing 22 miscues compared to 29 for the Lightning, and Brooklyn also edged Lehman in steals (13 to the Lightning's nine), and assists (18 to Lehman College's 15). The Lightning held a 5-2 advantage in blocks.

 

Lehman College will return to action on Wednesday evening as the Lightning will battle the Bloodhounds of John Jay College in a CUNYAC contest at the APEX Center, with game-time scheduled for 7:15pm.
