The Lehman College women's basketball team (4-8 Overall, 2-0 CUNYAC) started off 2010 the right way, picking up a victory and halting a two-game losing streak by defeating the Giants of Keystone College (1-6 Overall, 1-1 CSAC) by a score of 57-53 Monday afternoon at the APEX Center in the Bronx. The Lightning showed tremendous grit in the triumph, rallying from a nine-point deficit with 7:26 remaining to grab the victory.
In the win, Lehman was paced by the stellar effort of the consistent Tiana Rosa and she posted game-highs with 17 points and 11 rebounds to go along with a pair of assists and three blocked shots. It was the second straight game that the standout had dropped in 17 points and fourth straight game that she scored in double figures. In addition to Rosa, point guard Tonisha Kirby added 11 points and snatched five rebounds, and Barbara Febus dropped in 11 as well. Lehman out-rebounded Keystone College 53-40 and also dished 14 assists to the Giants' six. Following the victory, Head Coach Eric Harrison was very positive.
“To start a new year off with a victory is great for our confidence and our self esteem moving forward,” Harrison said. “We had lost two consecutive games and we wanted to get back on the right track as we get ready to resume our conference schedule, and I not only like the fact that we won, but I also like the way we won. We battled to come back and we showed character today. It'll be a battle on Wednesday against Staten Island but we're certainly ready.”
Despite the loss for Keystone College, the Giants' Ellen Fallon scored a team-high 17 points while tallying seven steals and grabbing five rebounds. Melinda Moore also contributed with 11 points and eight rebounds. Keystone won the turnover battle in the game, committing 18 miscues to Lehman's 21.
The Lightning shot 32.8 percent from the floor for the afternoon (20-61) while the Giants connected on 31 percent of their shots (18-58). Keystone College only made good on 14 of their 25 attempts from the charity stripe while the Lightning nailed 13 of their 20 shots from the free throw line.
Lehman College will return to action as the Lightning will battle the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island in a CUNYAC contest at the APEX Center on Wednesday evening, with game-time scheduled for 7:15pm.
