WOMEN'S BASKETBALL GRINDS OUT HARD-FOUGHT CUNYAC VICTORY OVER HUNTER IN OVERTIME

Box Score

The Lehman College women's basketball team (5-9 Overall, 3-1 CUNYAC) picked up a huge CUNYAC victory on Friday evening, turning back the Hunter College Hawks (6-5 Overall, 2-2 CUNYAC) by a score of 74-72 in overtime at the APEX Center in the Bronx.  The Lightning shot a blistering 47.5 percent from the floor in their victory while holding the Hawks to just 34.3 percent shooting.

The Lightning – as they did Monday afternoon against Keystone College – rallied back from a late deficit to pick up the victory. Lehman trailed 51-42 with 7:41 remaining in regulation before rallying and eventually pulling to within a point – 60-59 – with 2:05 remaining in the game. The Lightning would then take the lead on a three-point basket by newcomer Leslie Mencia with 1:17 remaining. Hunter standout Andrea Buckham would tie the game at 62 with 49 seconds left. Neither team would score another point in regulation as the game headed to overtime.

In the overtime session, Dorothy Hunte scored seven of her team-high 19 points in the extra session as the Lightning held off the Hawks and picked up a tremendous win. In addition to Hunte scoring 19 points, Mencia contributed in a huge way in her first game as a member of the Lightning as she scored 15 points and snatched 11 rebounds. Standout Tiana Rosa scored in double figures for the sixth straight game as she dropped in 15 points and grabbed 13 boards, and finally it was Melissa St. Louis netted 18 points and grabbed five rebounds as well.

“It was great to get a conference victory after the tough Staten Island loss,” Harrison said. “To be able to bounce back and grind out a victory here this evening will do wonders for our confidence moving forward and hopefully get us on a roll.”

Despite the loss for the Hunter College Hawks, Andrea Buckham put forth a strong performance as she scored a game-high 22 points to go along with 18 rebounds and five steals. Deseree Boler had a nice all around game as she scored 12 points, snatched six rebounds, dished six assists and tallied three steals, and Shamar Stewartson contributed 15 points off of the bench.

The Lightning will return to action on Monday evening as Lehman will battle Richard Stockton College, with game-time scheduled for 6:00pm.
