One Heck of a Birthday Present

Lehman Defeats New Rochelle 8-1

Coach Zack Davis has seen many birthdays pass, but his latest might have been the sweetest.

Not only did his women's tennis team triumph over visiting College of New Rochelle 8-1, improving Lehman's overall record to 3-2, but his girls surprised him prior to the match with a hearty rendition of “Happy Birthday” accompanied by a delicious birthday cake.

The festive mood followed the Lightning to the court as they took five of six singles matches and swept the doubles competition.

Playing in pro set fashion, Lehman's Ravnit Bhatia was the lone casualty, dropping her No. 1 singles match to New Rochelle's Christine Locke 10-9 (7-1).  Her teammates were up to the task, however, as Natalee Smith defeated Delnisha Baker 10-6 in No. 2 singles; Krystina Nguyen downed Emily Clay 10-4 in No. 3 singles; Daraliz Collado beat Karolyn Guzman 10-1 in No. 4 singles; Yasmin Samuels topped Mariym Luqman 10-1 in No. 5 singles; and Alexandria Reel shut out Mary Mitchell Smith 10-0 in No. 6 singles.

In doubles action Lehman's Bhatia gained a small measure of revenge for her singles loss, as she teamed with her No. 1 doubles partner Smith to defeat Locke and Baker 8-4.  New Rochelle fared no better in No. 2 doubles as the combo of Collado and Reel got by Clay and Guzman 8-1.  The Lightning's No. 3 pairing of Samuels and Nguyen closed out the day with an 8-0 shutout of Luqman and Smith.

Lehman returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to CUNYAC rival York College for a match at 12 p.m.
