Cougars Claw Their Way to Win Over Lightning

Looking to get back in the win column on Tuesday afternoon, a shorthanded Lehman women's tennis team lost a non-conference matchup 9-0 to host Kean University to fall to 3-4 on the season.

Competing without No. 1 singles player Ravnit Bhatia, sophomore Natalee Smith was given the task of matching up with last year's New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, Lauren Petrucelli. Validating her selection, Petrucelli cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

In other action Kean's elder statesman, senior Lisette LaForge, topped Daraliz Collado in No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-1; Miriam Penafiel blanked Krystina Nguyen 6-0, 6-0 (No. 3 singles); Debra Dress defeated Dalia Rodriguez 6-0, 6-1 (No. 4 singles); Jessica Oquendo held off Alexandria Reel after a competitive first set, 6-3, 6-1 (No. 5 singles); and Jaelynn Lee disposed of Ashley Cox 6-1, 6-0.

The Cougars pitched two shutouts in the doubles matches, posting 8-0 scores in No. 1 (LaForge/Debra Dress vs. Smith/Nguyen) and No. 2 (Petrucelli/Lee vs. Rodriguez/Cox) action. Lehman's No. 3 doubles team of Collado and Reel fared better, though also suffering defeat, 8-3, at the hands of Penafiel and Annie Ramos.

Lehman returns home on Thursday afternoon to face CUNYAC rival John Jay at 3:30 p.m. Prior to the match the Lehman athletics department will hold a special ceremony to officially unveil the new tennis courts that were resurfaced over the summer.
