NEW YORK, N.Y. - In its final City University of New York Athletic Conference match of the regular season, the Lehman women's volleyball team lost in agonizing fashion on Tuesday night, falling 3-2 (25-16, 18-25, 25-20, 19-25, 18-16) to John Jay College to drop its conference record to 5-3.
The loss, however, will not affect the Lightning's seeding in the upcoming CUNYAC Championships despite being tied with Brooklyn College, as Lehman won the recent head to head matchup between the schools.
Nevertheless, the loss was no less excruciating, especially considering the Lightning held leads of 9-5, 10-7 and 12-11 in the deciding fifth set before the Bloodhounds ultimately took the match.
Tied 13-13 after a John Jay service error, the teams traded the next seven points, producing a 16-16 stalemate following a kill by Lehman's
Jo-Marie Aquino. However, a service error by the Lightning and an ace by John Jay's Kathleen Estevez closed out the nip and tuck affair at 18-16 in favor of John Jay.
Lehman was led in the loss by
Gerri-Ann Martin's 18-kill, 13-dig effort.
Jennifer Winkler, back in the lineup after three consecutive absences, registered a team-high 16 digs to go along with seven kills.
Shari Quiles, stepping in for the team's regular setter
Jasmine Bermudez, collected 32 assists. Junior
Shayla Tompkins also added 14 digs while the freshman Aquino slammed seven kills.
The Lightning is back in action on Wednesday night when the team travels across the Bronx to face the College of Mount Saint Vincent at 7 p.m.
