Box Score
BRONX, N.Y. - It turns out that the Lehman women's volleyball team is not perfect.
After six matches of shutting out its opponents, the Lightning finally dropped a game on Friday night, though that didn't keep it from recording another impressive victory - its seventh in a row - over visiting New Jersey City University by the score of 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-15, 25-13).
Lehman was led by senior star
Gerri-Ann Martin's 17 kills and 13 digs.
Shari Quiles added 11 kills of her own while
Jasmine Bermudez collected 34 assists, five service aces and nine digs. Freshman
Jo-Marie Aquino proved to be a force around the net with three kills and two solo blocks.
A relatively easy first game for the Lightning, during which it built a 20-7 lead at one point before the 25-14 win, was followed by a completely different performance by the Gothic Knights in the second game.
Showing renewed intensity, NJCU took an early 13-9 lead only to watch as the Lightning came storming back with eight straight points to take a 17-13 lead of its own. Lehman got to within two points of taking the second game at 23-19 before NJCU reeled off the final six points to stun Lehman and grab the 25-23 victory.
NJCU's quality play continued into the third as it built a 13-11 lead. However, with
Racine Brown at the service line the Lightning ran off eight consecutive points to take a commanding 20-13 lead on its way to capturing the third game 25-15.
The fourth and final game featured strong serving by both Bermudez and Martin as the Lightning demoralized NJCU in building a 22-7 lead before closing things out 25-13.
Lehman returns to conference action on Columbus Day, October 10, when the team travels to the College of Staten Island to compete in a multi-match against Baruch and City College of New York.
