MAHWAH, N.J. - Competing in a marathon day of volleyball as part of a quad match on the campus of Ramapo College, the Lightning managed to earn a win in three tries against opponents Ramapo, St. Joseph's (LI) and John Jay on Saturday afternoon – its lone win a conference victory over the Bloodhounds – to drop its record to 2-6 on the season.
Lehman started the day by falling in straight sets to New Jersey Athletic Conference power Ramapo 25-11, 25-7, 25-17. It then followed that up with a tough luck five set loss to the St. Joseph's Eagles (18-25, 25-18, 25-27, 25-13, 15-11) before closing out the day with a three set win over John Jay (25-20, 25-20, 25-4).
The Lightning's hard fought loss to the Eagles included strong performances by several of its players including
Gerri-Ann Martin (18 kills, 14 digs),
Shari Quiles (9 kills, 15 digs),
Jasmine Bermudez (35 assists, 6 service aces), and
Jennifer Winkler (7 kills, 8 digs). Freshman
Julia Mercado contributed 10 digs.
Lehman's win over John Jay featured several new faces stepping to the forefront while veterans like Martin and Winkler received a much needed break. Sophomore
Anna Gura slammed seven kills to lead the team while also registering three service aces, and junior
Betsy Abril picked up the slack for No. 1 setter
Jasmine Bermudez by tallying 18 assists.
On Tuesday night the Lightning travels to Queens for a conference match with York College.
