RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The depth of the Dickinson College women's basketball team was too much for host Lehman College, as the Red Devils took a 73-54 decision on Saturday evening, in a game played in Manhattan College's Draddy Gymnasium.
Fourteen different players saw action for the Red Devils (4-1), who got 22 points off the bench. By contrast, Lehman played only eight players, with seven playing 16 minutes or more.
As the game began, Lehman got off to a hot start, with junior guard Jasmin Castro-Lopez (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) making her first two shots, and the game was tied at six points apiece. Sophomore forward Shalaya Nieves (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) scored on a putback at the 14:14 mark, and the Lightning (0-4) led, 8-6.
From there, Dickinson would go on a 17-0 run, taking the lead for good, at 23-8. Lehman would fight back, and cut the deficit to just seven points, at 26-19, when freshman guard Shameeka Reed (Bronx, N.Y./Pocono Mountain (Pa.) West) grabbed the offensive rebound and made an easy layup. The lead would swell back to as many as 12 points, before Nieves made a layup with 49 seconds to go in the half, setting the score at 35-27 at the break.
In the second half, freshman guard Jennifer Navarro (Jamaica, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) would open the scoring with a three-pointer, and suddenly Lehman was within two possessions, trailing just 35-30. However, an 11-0 run for the Red Devils would quickly extend the lead to 17 points.
Lehman would get no closer than 14 down the stretch, as Dickinson held on for the win.
On the evening, Castro-Lopez led Lehman with 19 points, shooting better than 50% for the game. Nieves had the game's sole double-double, with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Navarro had 13 points.
Belma Mekic paced Dickinson with 19 points, while Bridget Borgese added 17.
The Lightning will now embark on a three-game road trip next week, heading to Medgar Evers College on Tuesday, before travelling to Salisbury, Md., next weekend for the Salisbury University Optimist Tournament.
