BRONX, N.Y. - The Lehman College women's volleyball team (3-4, 2-1 CUNYAC) split a pair of matches on Tuesday night, falling to CUNYAC foe City College (3-3, 2-1 CUNYAC) in three sets, before sweeping Sarah Lawrence College (0-1). Set scores with CCNY were 25-21, 25-20, 25-12, while the SLC match went 25-20, 25-16, 26-24.
Both matches were hard-fought and highly competitive.
In the opener against City, both teams rallied back and forth. Sophomore Jo-Marie Aquino (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and junior Besa Zabelaj (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) each had six kills, while the CUNYAC/Metro PCS Rookie of the Week Imani Dubois (Bronx, N.Y./J.P. Taravella) had 17 assists. Aquino led the way defensively with 15 digs.
Against Sarah Lawrence, sophomore Cari English (Yonkers, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) had 11 kills while hitting .476. Aquino nearly missed a double-double, with nine kills and ten digs. Dubois was crucial to the offense with 30 assists and seven service aces.
The next match for Lehman will be on Thursday, September 13, when the Lightning travel to St. Joseph's College of Long Island, for a 7:00 p.m. match.
