Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. - The Lehman College women's volleyball team fought off a pesky St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn, 3-1, on Thursday evening. Set scores were 20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 27-25. The Lightning continue to dominate at home, running their record to 10-1 at the APEX.

Overall, Lehman's overall record advances to 16-6, while SJC falls to 9-6.

Junior outside hitter Jo-Marie Aquino (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) provided a huge lift for the Lightning, registering 21 kills and four service aces.

Lehman started flat, and dropped the first set. Trailing early in the second, senior outside hitter Besa Zabelaj (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) knocked three consecutive service aces to ignite the Lightning offense. Zabelaj had seven service aces on the evening.

St. Joseph's would not go down quietly, and continued to battle back. Several times Lehman would take commanding leads in the second and third sets, only to have the Bears rally.

The fourth match was a see-saw affair, with the score being tied 11 times, with four lead changes. SJC had the lead late at 23-22, when Lehman sophomore Imani Dubois (West Palm Beach, Fla./J. P. Tarravela) knocked down a kill to knot the game. Zabelaj's seventh ace of the night put the Lightning in the driver's seat, serving their first match-point, 24-23. The Bears were relentless, however, tying the score, before Dubois had another kill, setting up a second match-point for Lehman, at 25-24.

Dubois was next to serve, and but her volley went long, and, once again, the score was tied, this time at 25 apiece. From there, SJC had an attack error, sending Julia Mercado (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) to serve the third match-point for Lehman. The third time was the charm, as a Bear attack error ended the match in dramatic fashion.

On the night, Aquino and Dubois each recorded double-doubles. For Aquino, it was a match-high 21 kills and 16 digs, while Dubois had 13 kills and a match-high 20 digs.  Junior Jessica Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Theatre) had 42 assists.

The Lightning will now embark on a four match road trip, starting on Friday night, at NYU-Poly. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
