Women's Volleyball Advances to CUNYAC Semifinals with 3-0 Win Over York

BRONX, N.Y. – The third seeded Lehman College women's volleyball team defeated #6 York College, 3-0, in the Quarterfinal Round of the 2013 CUNY Athletic Conference/Pepsi Championships on Tuesday evening, and advanced into the Semifinals. Set scores were 25-16, 25-11, and 25-13.

The Lightning (21-7, 7-2 CUNYAC) will play #2 Hunter on Friday, November 8, at Hunter College, in a match scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. Hunter defeated #7 John Jay College, 3-0, on Tuesday evening.

Tonight, the Cardinals (7-22, 2-7 CUNYAC) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first set, but the Lightning would take over from there and never looked back.

Junior outside hitter Jo-Marie Aquino (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) led Lehman with 15 kills and five service aces on the night, while classmate Cari English (Yonkers, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) had seven kills and five service aces of her own. Freshman middle hitter Salveira Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale-Kingsbridge Academy) and sophomore outside hitter Imani Dubois (West Palm Beach, Fla./J.P. Taravella) tallied six kills each, as senior outside hitter Besa Zabelaj (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) knocked in five kills. Junior setter Jessica Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Theatre) contributed 28 assists and two service aces. As a team, Lehman had 39 kills and 18 service aces.
