BRONX, N.Y. - The Lehman College women's volleyball team dropped a thrilling hard fought game, 3-2 (16-25, 25-20, 25-22, 20-25, 11-15) to St. Joseph's College of Long Island on Tuesday night. This is just Lehman's first home loss of the season.
The Lightning (2-2) fell behind 1-0, but dominated the second and third sets by blocking shots and hitting the ball well. After dropping the fourth set, which was a back-and-forth affair, Lehman jumped out to an early 8-1 lead in the rubber game. The Golden Eagles (2-4) would rally by scoring point after point and eventually took the lead in which they hung onto to win the match.
The Lightning had a very balanced attack as junior outside hitter Jo-Marie Aquino (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) led the way with 13 kills, eight digs, three blocks assists, and a service ace. Her classmate Cari English (Yonkers, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) registered eight kills, six service aces, four digs, four block assists, and three block solos. Junior libero Julia Mercado (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) had 15 digs to lead the team. Junior setter Jessica Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Theatre) had a team high 32 assists. Senior outside hitter Besa Zabelaj (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) contributed with 11 digs, five kills and two service aces.
Freshman Salveira Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale-Kingsbridge Academy) tallied six kills, three digs, two block assists and two block solos, in her first game with the program. The Lightning tallied 11 total team blocks while St. Joseph's had six.
The Lightning will return to the APEX on Thursday when Mount Saint Vincent College crosses Broadway. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
