Women's Volleyball Holds off Tough CMSV Squad For 3-1 Win

BRONX, N.Y. - The Lehman College women's volleyball team bounced back to defeat the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 3-1, on Thursday night. Set scores were 25-15, 25-15, 18-25, 25-18, in a match played in the APEX.  The Lightning are now 3-2 this year, including winning three of their first four home games.

Junior outside hitter Jo-Marie Aquino (Bronx, N.Y ./Cardinal Spellman) led the way for the Lightning with 12 kills. Classmate Cari English (Yonkers, N.Y. /Cardinal Spellman ) tallied ten kills of her own, while freshman middle hitter Salveira Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale-Kingsbridge Academy) and senior outside hitter Besa Zabelaj (White Plains, N.Y. /White Plains) recorded six kills each. 

The Lightning dominated the first two sets to go up 2-0. The Dolphins (0-5) would not go down quietly, as they rallied and won the third set to stay alive. After a back-and-forth battle in the fourth set, Lehman would eventually pull away to clinch the game and the match.

Junior setter Jessica Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y. /Bronx Theatre) registered 28 out of the team's 31 assists to help propel the Lightning to the victory. Sophomore outside hitter Imani Dubois (West Palm Beach, Fla./J.P. Taravella) had 10 digs, which were the most for Lehman.

The Lightning will debut in conference action this Saturday, September 14, when they take part in a CUNY Athletic Conference multi-match at York College. Lehman will face both John Jay College and Medgar Evers Colleges.
